Free Meals for Veterans on Veterans Day and How to Thank And Honor Veterans

Hi, I am so sorry that it has been so long since I have posted. I have fallen behind in my classes and so I was afraid that I would fall even further behind in my classes if I spent time posting. Nevertheless, I feel that it is so important to honor and thank the over 24 million veterans and active duty military today that I felt that I just had to take out time to post this post. I found some great restaurants that are offering free meals for veterans today. I also found some great resources that help people thank and honor Veterans and Active Duty Military personnel; I thought that I should include that here too.

Free Meals & More for Veterans on Veteran's Day-

Applebees - On Friday, November 11th Veterans and Active Duty military can go to Applebees to enjoy one of their 7 signature entrees. Last year Applebees served 1,024,000 million free meals to military veterans and active service members. A proof of service will be required.

BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse - They are offering a complimentary lunch entree or a free one topping mini pizza for dinner. This offer is valid for all veterans and active duty military with proof of service.

Champps Americana - Veterans and Active Military will receive a free burger at Champps on Veterans' Day. This offer is not valid for either the Kobe Burger or the pepper jack burger. A proof of service will be required.

Chili's - Veterans and Active Duty Military eat free at Chili's on Veteran's Day from 11am-5pm. Any Lunch Combo is included in this offer. This offer is valid at participating Chili's only. A proof of military service is necessary to obtain the offer.

Fox & Hound and Bailey's Sports Bar - Active Duty Military and Veterans will receive a free item from the 7 under $7 menu. Military ID or proof of service is required.

Golden Corral- This is how military wallet describes the Military Appreciation Dinner on Veteran's Day: "Free meal, Monday Nov. 14: The 10th annual Golden Corral Military Appreciation dinner will be held on Monday, November 14, 2011 from 5 pm to 9 pm in all Golden Corral Restaurants nationwide. The free “thank you” dinner is available to any person who has ever served in the United States Military. If you are a veteran, retired, currently serving, in the National Guard or Reserves, you are invited to participate in Golden Corral’s Military Appreciation Monday dinner.

Special thanks to Golden Corral: To date, Golden Corral restaurants have provided over 2.5 million free meals and contributed over $4.3 million to the Disabled American Veterans organization."

Famous Dave's - This link provides a listing of all of the participating locations. Each participating location has its own offer for Veterans or active duty military.

McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurants - On Sunday, November 13th, McCormick & Schmick's is celebrating their 13th annual Veteran's Appreciation Event. During this event, Veterans will be able to choose between either a complimentary lunch or dinner entree. Veterans must present proper identification or proof of service. Details are available on the link above. Reservations are recommended.

Spaghetti Warehouse -The Spaghetti Warehouse is celebrating its: "Once in a Lifetime Veteran's Day Celebration" on 11/11/11. In honor of this special Veteran's Day, they are offering lasagne or any original recipe spaghetti entree for .11 cents. This offer is available for anyone.

The Outback Steakhouse - According to their site, in order to thank the active duty military and Veterans, "We honor our heroes with a free Bloomin' Onion and a Coca-Cola Nov. 7-11th in 2011 in celebration of Veteran's Day. Supporting our troops and their families has been our longstanding commitment. What began as a grassroots initiative in Tampa, Florida, when Outback Steakhouse was founded nearly 23 years ago, has since grown into an international effort.

We launched Operation Feeding Freedom in 2002, sending a team of volunteer employees to Afghanistan to feed American troops. Since then, Outback has made a total of 9 trips to the Middle East and served over 215,000 troops, bringing them a much needed taste of home.

Texas Roadhouse - From 11am- 2pm on Friday, Nov.11th, all Texas Roadhouses across the country will offer a free lunch to Active Duty Military and Veterans. They will also offer the choice of a free Coca-Cola product, iced tea, sweat tea of coffee. Proof of military service is necessary to obtain the offer.

TGI Friday's - TGI Friday's is offering all US Military Service Personnel and Veterans a buy one entree get one entree free special. Proof of military service is necessary to obtain the offer.

Olive Garden - Active Duty military and Veterans will be given a complimentary entree at Olive Gardens across the nation on Veteran's Day.

"Home Depot and Lowe’s Military Coupon Updates

Update: Home Depot and Lowes 10% Military Discount Available Everyday.
Home Depot Military Discount: The Home Depot(R) is offering all active duty personnel, reservists, retired military, veterans and their families a 10 percent discount off their purchases in honor of Veteran’s Day. The offer is valid on purchases of up to $2,000 for a maximum of $200 and is available at The Home Depot stores, The Home Depot Design Center locations, Yardbirds and EXPO Design Center(R) locations. The 10% military discount is available everyday for active duty and retirees, but not all veterans. Home Depot makes this offer available to all veterans on most military holidays. Lowe’s Military Discount: Lowe’s Companies, Inc. will offer all active, reserve, honorably discharged, retired military personnel and their immediate family members a 10 percent discount on in-store U.S. purchases made during the Veterans Day holiday. The discount is available Nov. 7 – Nov. 11. The discount is available on in-stock and special order purchases up to $5,000. To qualify, individuals must present a valid military ID or other proof of service. Excluded from the discount are sales via Lowes.com, previous sales, and purchases of services or gift cards. Like Home Depot, Lowes offers this discount daily to active duty military members, but not to veterans. However, they extend the offer to military veterans on military holidays. Free Park Admissions for Veterans Day

Anheuser-Busch Parks. Anheuser-Busch Parks offers Active Duty Service Members free admission for them and up to 3 dependents to any of their parks once a year. Throughout 2011, members of the military and as many as three direct dependents may enter SeaWorld, Busch Gardens or Sesame Place parks with a single-day complimentary admission. The Here’s to the Heroes program is only available to Any active duty, activated or drilling reservist, or National Guardsman. Eligible parks include: Adventure Island, Busch Gardens (Tampa Bay or Williamsburg), SeaWorld (Orlando, San Diego, or San Antonio), Sesame Place, and Water Country USA. Not valid at Discovery Cove and Aquatica. Christmas Town at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Va. is not included as part of this program. Colonial Williamsburg Free Admission. Colonial Williamsburg offers free weekend-long admission tickets to active-duty military, reservists, retirees, veterans, and their immediate dependents from Friday, Nov. 11 through Sunday, Nov. 13th. The complimentary ticket includes admission to Colonial Williamsburg exhibition sites, art museums, and most daytime programs, as well as free parking and use of the shuttle bus system. Fee Free Day at National Parks. To honor America’s service men and women, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that areas managed by the National Park Service would not charge entrance fees for Veteran’s Day weekend – November 11-13, 2011. Over 100 national Parks will be participating in this event.
Historic Jamestowne – Free Admission. The National Park Service commemorates Veterans Day with Fee Free days at Historic Jamestowne November 11-13. Free admission for everyone. See events calendar.
Knotts Berry Farm Military Tribute Days – Free Admission. Knott’s Berry Farm has an annual Military Tribute event in which they offer military members past and present by offering free park admission. This year the Military Tribute Days run from November 1 – 24 November (Thanksgiving Day). Veterans or current serving military personnel plus one guest get in FREE with proper ID presented at Knott’s turnstile (DD214, Veterans Administration Hospital ID or Active Military Service ID). Purchase up to six additional tickets for just $17 each. More info.
Pro Football Hall of Fame – Free Admission. Annual Veterans Day Salute, Saturday, November 05, 2011, 09:00 AM – 05:00 PM. Any veteran or member of the armed forces and their spouse or a guest will be admitted free of charge to the Hall of Fame for a day-long recognition of US Military veterans. Members of the Blue and Gold Star Mothers will also be eligible for free admission. There will be a special ceremony beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Hall of Fame’s NFL Films Theater. More information.
San Jacinto Monument and Museum (La Porte, TX). November 7-13: Free admission to the theatre, Observation Floor, and (on November 12-13) the special exhibit to all veterans and their families. More info.

Bed and Breakfast for Vets

In the third year of the program, B&Bs for Vets has organized over 485 (and counting) participating Bed and Breakfasts and Inns across the US and Canada which will be offering veterans a free night’s stay on November 10th, the night before Veterans Day. This offer is available to both active duty military members and veterans with ID, but space is limited. Each Inn and B&B has at least one room available for this promotion and reservations must be made directly through the participating Inns and B&Bs. For more information visit B&Bs for Vets.

Free Hugo® Canes for Veterans.

Sam’s Club® locations nationwide will distribute 36,000 Hugo® canes free of charge on November 9th, 10th, 11th, 2011 to U.S. military veterans in need of mobility assistance. The site advises Veterans to bring or do the following, in advance, as a precaution:

Proof of Military Service. First, most companies require some form of military ID – including a U.S. Uniform Services ID Card (active/reserve/retired), Current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), Photograph in uniform, be wearing uniform (if your service permits), Veterans Organization Card (e.g., American Legion and VFW), DD214, discharge paperwork, or other form of identification. Other restaurants and companies may only require a photo of you in uniform, or go by the honor system.
Participation. Second, always call ahead to verify locations, times, and participation. Many of the listed companies are franchises and may have different policies. We will do our best to keep this page updated as we find new info.

The Easiest Scholarships Ever - PART 1-

The following 26 scholarships are quick and easy to apply for; each scholarship only takes a few minutes to complete. Moreover, there are no essays to compose or extensive academic records that are required. However, the one down side is that the odds of winning one of these scholarships might not be as good as the odds of winning some of the more difficult or obscure traditional scholarships. A good way to increase the odds in your favor is to apply to as many of them as possible. Even better, continue to apply to the more traditional scholarships while simultaneously applying for the scholarship drawings. 1. SunTrust "Off To College" Scholarship Sweepstakes - The registration for the 2011-2012 Sweepstakes begins September 16th (so you don't need to apply for this one until the fall.) The Off To College Sweepstakes offers students the chance to win a $1,000 scholarship for educational expenses at an accredited college or private career college. High school seniors that are planning to attend college and current college students who will be continuing their undergraduate studies are eligible to apply for this scholarship contest. Fifteen drawings will be held and one winner will be chosen every two weeks from October 28th, 2011 through May 11, 2012. This contest is free to enter and the eligibility is not based on GPA or financial need. Students are allowed only one entry per drawing; however, they may register again for each drawing period (every two week period.) To enter (in the fall), students should click on the link and fill the online entry form. Full details are also available on the link.

2. eCampus Tours.com Scholarship Giveaway - Register for an account with eCampus Tours and then you are eligible to register for the scholarship giveaway. Both registrations are free. As a side benefit, once you have created an account and profile with eCampus, you will be able to search for even more scholarships. Not only is this an extensive scholarship search resource but there is also data about items such as how to compare different financial aid packages. Once you are registered, complete and submit an online form for the scholarship by March 31st, 2012. Two winners will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. The drawing to pick the winners will be random. There is a limit of one entry per student. Full details are available here.

3. Car Donors.com Quarterly Scholarship Awards - Every three months, Car Donors.com awards a $500 scholarship. The next application deadline is for December 31st, 2011. Just click on the link to find out more information about this scholarship.

4. Efficient Learning Systems, Inc. Scholarships - According to the Efficient Learning System, Inc.'s site, they "award several hundred full CPAexcel Professional Mentoring scholarships each year, without conditions or obligations of any kind, under the following programs:

Just click on the first link and fill out the short survey available on the link to enter.

6. Scholarship Points -Scholarship Points has monthly scholarship drawings worth up to $10,000. They respect your data privacy and do not sell your personal data.

10. Answers.com Scholarship Program - Answers.com, the popular Q & A site, established a $20,000 scholarship fund to help deserving students obtain an education. Answers.com awards one winner with a $5000 scholarship, two second place winners with a $2,500 scholarship (each), and ten third place winners with a $1,000 scholarship (each.) The entry period for the contest usually lasts from January until February. Thus, the entry period is currently closed. However, it should open later in the year. It is definitely worth it to continue to check back with this link later in the year. In prior contests, entrants needed to answer 50 questions on any topic that was available and then submit an application with 50 new questions.

11. Frame My Future Scholarship Contest - This scholarship contest from Church Hill Classics doesn't require entrants to submit essays or fulfill extensive prerequisites in order for the students to be eligible for the contest. Instead, the contest is meant to be a fun and creative way for students to earn scholarship money. The entry period usually lasts from October until March. While the 2011 Frame My Future Contest entry period has ended, the 2012 should be announced soon. The link above leads to the official site of the contest. Click on the link on the website that allows you to sign up for 2012 notification list. After signing up, students can be notified (by email) the moment the 2012 scholarship contest begins. The 2011 contest asked students to submit an original entry piece that described what students wanted to accomplish after they finished college. The theme for 2011 was: "how I frame my future." Students could submit any of the following pieces based on the theme for their entry:

and other creative media that is specified on the official site

The Grand Prize winner award for 2011 was $5,000. They also awarded 5 additional $1,000 scholarships. Students attending a U.S. college or university full time ( who are legal residents of the U.S.) are eligible to enter the contest.

12. Go College Scholarship - Go College.com offers a free $250 monthly scholarship drawing for students. It is incredibly easy to enter this contest. Just use the Go College.com website and give Go College your opinion on how to improve their website. This website also lists many scholarships and college admission tips.

13. Next Step Magazine Scholarship - Register with Next Step for a chance to win up to $10,000 for college. The deadline to enter is January 2, 2012. Next Step also holds a $100 teen writing contest. Students that enter can win $100 along with a chance to have their writing published in Next Step Magazine. Students that register for either contest will be receive free Next Step electronic magazines and newsletters. The magazine focuses on college planning advice.

14. Super College Scholarships - This is a $1500 scholarship contest that is open to all students (high school, college, grad or adult) who are currently in college or plan to attend college within the next year. The scholarship can be used on educational expenses. The deadline to apply is on July 31st, 2011.

15. US Bank Scholarships - US Bank will award 40 $1000 scholarships for the 2011-2012 academic year. Click on the link above to apply online. The application will be accepted from October 1st, 2011 through March 31st, 2012. All high school seniors (graduating in the 2011-2012 academic year) and college undergraduates are eligible for the scholarship. Winners will be selected at random.

16. CKSF Scholarship - According to the overview about The Common Knowledge Scholarships, these scholarships were created to be fun and easy and yet still educational. Students do not need to submit essays or their academic records in order to be considered for these scholarships. Instead, these scholarships are quizzes 'that reward students for demonstrating what they know'. High school students up through graduate students are eligible (they do have that many levels of quizzes.) New scholarships become available on a monthly basis. 17. "Tell A Friend" Scholarships.com Sweepstakes - To enter this scholarship, register with Scholarships.com and refer friends to register as well. For every friend that creates a profile on Scholarships.com by clicking the link of the original referrer, Scholarships.com will enter the original referrer in for another chance at winning the $1000 scholarship. There is no limit to how many people can link to a referrer. If the referrer wins the scholarship, one of the friends will be chosen at random to receive a $500 scholarship. Wells Fargo College STEPS Program - When high school students enroll in Wells Fargo's STEPS Program , they will be sent emails that contain tips on how to study, get financial aid, and make campus visits. Even better, students who sign up for the STEPS program will be automatically enrolled into the CollegeSTEPS Sweepstakes. The Sweepstakes scholarship award is $1,000; and Wells Fargo will award 20 $1,000 scholarships. The Sweepstakes is open to full or part-time high school students (freshmen through seniors) who are legal residents of the U.S. and attend high school (including home school.) To enter the drawing, click on the link above and complete the request form on their website. Christian Connector will also send you free information about Christian colleges/universities and the over $150 million in scholarships that are available on their scholarship search. The Drawing rules pages can be viewed here. According to the rules page, there are actually 4 different scholarships. The first scholarship, the Undergraduate Scholarship Drawing, has already been mentioned. However, it is important to know about the eligibility criteria that is listed on the rules page. The second scholarship is the Seminary/Christian Graduate School Scholarship $1000 Drawing; and the criteria for eligibility is also listed on the rules page. The third scholarship is the Distance Learning (Undergraduate or Graduate) Scholarship $1000 Drawing. The fourth scholarship is the Missions Scholarship $1,000 Drawing. The eligibility criteria for both the third and the fourth scholarships are also listed on the rules page. The scholarship drawings run each year from June 1st through May 31st.

20. Sallie Mae College Answer Scholarship Drawings - Register on Sallie Mae's website to enter their monthly $1,000 scholarship drawing. Parents of students are also eligible to win the annual $10,000 Parent Answer Sweepstakes. Registration on the site also enables students to search Sallie Mae's scholarship database.

21. Discover Colleges Scholarships - To enter this $2500 scholarship drawing, just complete and submit the registration form on the link above. A word of caution, the site discloses that this is for private colleges only.

22. $20,000 Sweet Diggity Dawg Scholarship - Zinch.com is sponsoring this $20,000 scholarship. Current high school students graduating in 2011, 2012, 2013 or 2014 with a minimum of a 2.0 GPA are eligible to enter this contest. The deadline to enter is on January 15th, 2012. Just fill out the Zinch profile that is available on their website in order to enter. Students that have registered with Zinch.com will gain access to Zinch's database of over 1.1 million scholarships (with some exclusive scholarships) that total over $1.7 billion dollars. Better yet, Zinch matches any scholarship that a student that is registered with them wins. Also, for every referral to Zinch that wins a scholarship, Zinch will also give the friend that made the referral an equal scholarship.

23. Free College Scholarships.net Scholarships - To enter to win this $10,000 scholarship, just complete and submit the online application at the link above. The scholarship can be used at any college, university, or academic program. The official terms and conditions of the drawing can be found here. The deadline to enter is on July 15th, 2011. The scholarship is only available to students that are 18 years old or older. The drawing is currently open to U.S. residents only. No purchase is necessary to enter the drawing.

Ipsos i-Say $5000 Scholarship - This contest is open to all legal Canadian and United States residents who are 14 years old or older (with the exception of employees of IPSOS-REID Corporation and Ipsos Insight, its divisions, subsidiaries and affiliates, their respective agencies, and members of their immediate families.)

25. $5,555 Super Student Stimulus Scholarship - College Students or students intending to enroll in college (in this next year) are eligible to apply for this scholarship from Zinch. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is on December 31st, 2011.

26. Cappex "A GPA Isn't Everything" Scholarship - To enter this $1000 scholarship drawing from Cappex, fill out and submit the online registration form. Joe Foss 2011 Independence Day Scholarship Essay Contest - " Oh Say Can You See: What The Star Spangled Banner Means to Me"- This is an essay contest that offers high school students a chance at winning a $5,000 scholarship. To be eligible, students need to write and submit a minimum of 1,500 words in the essay. The essay should be based on the theme of: "Oh, Say Can You See: What The Star Spangled Banner Means to Me?" The winner receives the $5,000 scholarship. The runner-up receives a $500 scholarship. All essays must be received electronically by 11:59MST, Sunday, July 3, 2011. Please download and carefully review the official guidelines.
2. Patriotic Scholarships for America's Heroes - The most well known scholarship program for military service is the GI Bill and this link leads directly to the site for the GI Bill scholarships. However, there are many other sources of scholarships for veterans and active duty military service members.
A. Patriotic & Noble AMVETS Scholarship for Veterans -This program actually offers a variety of college military scholarships for current veterans, active military soldiers, and also for the children of veterans. The AMVETS has has 3 main National AMVETS scholarships programs for veterans and their families, and one National scholarship program veterans/guardsmen/reservists only. The mission behind this scholarship program is to provide the means for veterans to continue their education even after their GI Bill benefits are depleted. Here is the direct link to the program: The AMVETS National Scholarship Program. According to this link, the scholarship must be used for full-time study. $1,000 will be awarded for each year of study for a maximum of four years. The application deadline is usually some time in April. Complete rules are available at the second link for the AMVETS scholarship. B. The Air Force Aid Society Spouse Tuition Assistance Program - The Air Force Aid Society offers the General George S. Brown Spouse Tuition Assistance Program (STAP.) The program provides partial tuition assistance for spouses of Active Duty airmen or officers, who accompany members to overseas locations and will be attending college programs. The STAP program provides up to 50% of the unmet tuition charges per course. There is a maximum of $1,500 in assistance per academic year. The Air Force Aid Society also provides an excellent listing of other sources of scholarships for military officers. The listing includes sites like: Military Scholar.org, Military.com, and The Air Force Sergeants Association.
C. The Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association Scholarships - The Association is definitely 'dedicated to excellence in education' as its webpage states. The Association provide an unbelievable amount of scholarships for military personnel and ROTC students. Additionally, The AFCEA sponsor scores of scholarships for undergraduates, graduates, working students, and teachers that teach STEM subjects. Military personnel and veterans are eligible for all of these additional scholarships as well.

D. The Blinded Veterans Association Kathern F. Gruber Scholarship Program - Spouses and dependent children of blinded veterans are eligible for this scholarship program. The Kathern F. Gruber Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit. The awards are initially provided for one year only but the scholarships are renewable for up to three times. The veteran must be legally blind; the blindness may either be service-connected or non-service connected. The blinded veteran family member does not need to be a BVA member in order for the spouse of child to be eligible for the scholarship. However, it is necessary for the applicant to have already been accepted for admission, or already be enrolled, as a full-time student in an accredited institution of higher education. Applications that are submitted should included: transcripts, three letters of reference, a 300-word essay on the applicant's post-education or lifetime career goals and aspirations, and a completed application form. Last year, the program awarded six scholarships. Each scholarship was in the amount of $2,000. A Microsoft Word document that contains information and applications for the scholarship is available at the site. Typically, the scholarship deadlines occur around April 15th. However, it is hard to know for sure until the program announces the details for next year. Please continue to check the link to find out about the full information for next year's scholarships. The BVA also provides a massive list of resources for blinded veterans.
E. The Fleet Reserve Association Scholarships - The Fleet Reserve Association Education Foundation appreciates that every day military men and women risk their lives to protect and defend our Nation. Yet, the heart-breaking reality that the FRA Education Foundation is also aware of is that while the national unemployment rate is at 9.8%, the unemployment rate for veterans is over 11.3%. The FRA Education Association is doing its part to lower that startling statistic for service members and veterans. As the site has it stated, "FRA's scholarship program has ... been helping deserving students reach their educational and professional goals for decades, presenting annual awards of up to $5,000 to individuals pursuing college and graduate degrees... Just since 2000, the FRA scholarship program has provided over 200 scholarships totaling more than $850,000. This year, FRA is going even further and marking its 85th anniversary by launching the FRA Education Foundation. We recognize more is needed to ensure that our Nation's military, and their families are afforded an education that will benefit their future - and that of our country. The Foundation is an important step in growing the scholarship program."

F. The Walter E. Beall Scholarship - This is a scholarship for students who aspire to study aeronautical engineering or pursue aviation-oriented degrees. To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants should be FRA members or spouses of FRA members, or sons/grandsons/daughters/granddaughters of a FRA member in good-standing for at least two years (if the FRA member is deceased then the member should have been in good standing for at least 2 years prior to the death.) Applicants must also be U.S. citizens that are enrolled in accredited colleges/universities. Scholarship judges will make their decisions by considering the following criteria: financial need, SAT scores, academic achievement, community involvement and grade point average. The scholarship awards range from $2,000-$5,000. Recipients of scholarships are eligible to have their scholarships renewed. The FAQ section of the website contains the complete details. G. The Ladies Auxiliary of The Fleet Reserve Association Scholarships - The LA FRA also sponsors several scholarships. Application forms for FRA scholarships can be used to apply for LA FRA scholarships; however, applicants that want to be considered for both FRA and LA FRA awards must submit separate application packages for both organizations. Complete information about the LA FRA scholarships is available at the link above.
H. The Foundation of the 1st Cavalry Division Association Scholarships - These grants are provided to the children of those soldiers of the First Cavalry Division who died, or were totally and permanently disabled while serving the division. Since the Foundation's founding in 1968, no child of a Trooper that has been killed or disabled has been turned away for lack of funds. Scholarships reach a maximum of $1,200 per year. A maximum of $4,800 for four years of schooling per student will be provided to scholarship recipients. The Foundation also provides for scholarships for active duty members of the division. I. Military Order of the Purple Heart Scholarships -The Purple Heart Scholarships are awarded to the children or grandchildren of a Purple Heart recipient or for a member in good standing with the organization. The 2011 scholarships have already been awarded; however, continue to check back with this link in order to learn about the 2012 scholarships.

J. Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Scholarships - The mission of NMCRS education programs is succinctly summarized on their site in the following manner: "to help eligible Navy and Marine Corps service members and families pursue their academic goals by providing a source of education financing. Scholarships and no-interest loans are available, provided solely on the basis of the applicant's financial need in accordance with policies established by the Society's Board of Directors." Eligible applicants for the scholarships should be enrolled or planning to enroll as full-time undergraduate students in an accredited higher education facility. All applicants must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA. Scholarships are renewable; however, students must re-apply each year. Complete details about how and where to apply are available in the link above. In addition to the many loan programs offered through the Society, the following scholarships are offered:

The Joseph A. McAlinden Divers Scholarship - This scholarship is offered specifically to Navy and Marine Corps Divers (whether the divers are active duty or retired) and their family members. This scholarship is available for full-time undergraduate and graduate students, who must be involved in one of the following ares of study: Oceanography, Ocean Agriculture, or Aquaculture. The scholarship also provides assistance for Department of Navy approved advanced diver training, qualifications and certifications. The scholarship is need-based and ranges from $500 up to $3,000 per academic year. There is no deadline for the program; interested applicants can apply at any time.
Society of Sponsors of the United States Navy Centennial Scholarship Program - This program is offered to Iraq-Afghanistan combat wounded veterans who are pursuing a degree that leads to license and certification as a teacher. The Society sponsors five $3,000 annual scholarships. There is no deadline for the program; applications are accepted through-out the year. NMCRS Gold Star Scholarship Program - The Gold Star Program provides academic grants for eligible children and spouses (that have not remarried) of deceased Sailors and Marines. Awards are needs-based and the amount is determined by NMCRS Headquarters Education Division. The complete details about the scholarships are provided on the site in the link above.
Other Scholarships for Military Veterans and Service Members

3. Americanism Essay Contest for Grades 7-12 - The FRA National Committee on Americanism-Patriotism sponsors an annual Americanism Essay Contest, based on a theme announced each summer. The contest includes a Grand National Prize of a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond, with a $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 Savings Bond awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each category. All of the details about the 2011-2012 contest will be posted on this site in July (very soon.) The contest is open to all students grades 7 through 12 including home-schoolers.

4. The Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarships -The Washington Crossing Foundation has the goal of "perpetuating the principles, the ideals and the Spirit of 1776." One of the ways in which they try to fulfill this mission is through their scholarship program. The foundation offers a variety of regional and national scholarships that range $500 to $5000. To get an idea of how many scholarships the foundation typically awards students, consider what they awarded students last year. In 2010, thirty-four students from 22 states across the nation received scholarships. The Foundation has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships. Students do not apply for specific scholarships; an application is automatically considered in each category for which it qualifies. All high school seniors who are U.S. citizens and are planning careers of service to the United States (in local, state, or federal government) are eligible. Entrants that receive the full four year tuition scholarship shall only be eligible for one-year special awards. Full scholarship application details are available at this link.  The following is a brief summary of what the application should include (with copies in triplicate): of transcripts, the form available through the Foundation, letters of recommendations, any other relevant documents, and an essay. The one-page essay should not exceed 300 words. The essay should state why the applicant is planning a career in government service including any inspiration to be derived from the leadership of George Washington in his famous crossing of the Delaware. The judges (of the scholarship winners) will base their decisions upon the applicants' understanding of the career requirements, purpose of choice of in a career. qualities of leadership exhibited, sincerity, and historical perspective. The three dossiers (3 copies of the applications) should be mailed (this cannot be submitted online) together, unfolded in one, flat, 9"X 12" envelope. Applications must be received by January 15, 2012 and addressed to:

5. Voice Of Democracy Essay - The Voice of Democracy Essay Contest is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW.) This is an audio essay contest that is open to all students in grades 9-12 (including students in public, home, private and parochial high schools) in the United States and its territories. The winner of the Voice of Democracy Essay Contest will win a $30,000 scholarship. To enter, students should start by drafting an essay on the 2011-2012 theme: "Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military?" Next, students should record their reading of the essay on to a CD. Students should produce a three to five minute recording in order to meet the prerequisites of the contest. Students should then submit their entries to a local VFW post. The entry should include a typed version of the audio, the CD, and a completed Voice of Democracy entry form. The deadline to enter is November 1st, 2011. 6. Patriot's Pen Essay Contest - The Patriot's Pen Essay Contest is also sponsored by the VFW. This program is open to all students in grades 6-8 in the United States and its territories. In order to enter, students must ask a teacher or youth group leader to supervise their progress in the competition. Next, students should contact a local VFW post that is participating in the contest and establish a contact at the post (that is either a member of that post or its Ladies Auxiliary.) Then, students should compose an essay on the 2011-2012 theme: "Are You Proud of Your Country?" Essays should be no less than 300 words in length and should not exceed 400 words in length. Please submit the final essay with Patriot's Pen entry form (available at the link above) to the local VFW post. Entries should be submitted no later than November 1st. 7. American Legion Scholarships/ Extensive Listing of Patriotic Scholarships - There is a massive listing of all of the scholarships available through the American Legion at this link:
A. The American Legion Legacy Scholarship - The purpose behind this scholarship is to make higher education possible for children whose parents have been killed while serving our country. The Legion has offered support through these scholarships that are given to children of U.S. military personnel who died on active duty on or after September 11, 2001. The applicant must be a high school senior or high school graduate to be eligible for the scholarship. The scholarship deadline is usually around April 15th. So, please continue to check this link for 2012 scholarship details.
B. The American Legion Baseball Scholarship - The American Legion sponsors several baseball scholarships to deserving players. Each Department Baseball Committee may select a player from their Department to receive this scholarship.
C. The Samsung American Legion Scholarship -To honor Korean War veterans, The American Legion and Samsung award $300,000 in these scholarships annually. The $5 million fund for the program was created to show appreciation for U.S. veterans who came to Korea's aid during its struggle against communism during the Korean War. The Legion awards these to nearly 100 Boys State and Girls State participants who are direct descendants of a veteran eligible for Legion membership. Deadlines are available at Boys State and Girls State local chapters.
D. National High School Oratorical Contest - In this Oratorical Contest, scholarships are awarded to three finalists: the first place winner receives $18,000; the second place winner receives $16,000 and the third place winner receives $14,000. The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to instill a deeper appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among students. High school students under age 20 are eligible to compete in this contest. Speeches are eight to ten minutes long; however, students are also required to create a three to five minute speech on an assigned topic. The official rules and regulations are available at this link. Over $138,000 in scholarships can be awarded each year for this program. In addition to the national scholarships, hundreds of scholarships are available to participants at the district, post, county and department level. Students compete at the state level before they proceed to the finals. Each state winner certified into and participating in round one of the national contest receives a $1,500 scholarship. Any 1st round winner who advances but does not qualify for the final contest receives an additional $1,500 scholarship. The Oratorical Contest Finals will be held from April 13th-15th, 2012. E. Eagle Scout of The Year - The American Legion awards the Eagle Scout of the Year with a $10,000 scholarship. Each of the three runners-up is also awarded a $2,500 scholarship. The Eight And Forty Lung and Respiratory Disease Nursing Scholarship Fund - According to this link, "the Eight and Forty Lung and Respiratory Disease Nursing Scholarship was established to assist registered nurses with advanced preparation for positions in supervision, administration or teaching. Students must have employment prospects in specific positions in hospitals, clinics, or health departments upon completion of their education, and the position must have a full-time and direct relationship to pediatric lung and respiratory control. Applicants must have a current registered nurse license. Scholarship awards are $3,000 each." Deadlines are usually in May. Please continue to check this link for 2012 scholarship information.
G. Need A Lift? -The American Legion has produced this brochure (which is updated annually) to serve as a complete financial aid reference guide to veterans. This amazing booklet ( in both its online and physical 152 page forms) contains information on federal and state veterans benefits; scholarships for veterans and their dependents (and for Legionnaires and their family members); tips for applying to college and applying for financial assistance; and a comprehensive guide to colleges and universities listing tuition, room, and board costs, and admission and financial aid deadlines.
8. The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund - As stated here: "The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund honors the bravery and dedication exhibited by Americans in our Armed Forces who have sacrificed life or limb defending our country by providing educational scholarships to their children. Thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and Guardsmen have been killed in War on Terror. Thousands more members of our Armed Forces have been permanently disabled, leaving their families in difficult financial situations. Their children - the sons and daughters of America's military heroes - ... will be eligible for a Freedom Alliance Scholarship in the years to come. Freedom Alliance has established a permanent Scholarship Trust Fund to aid the children of these brave Americans... Through the generosity of so many patriotic Americans, the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund will provide scholarships for thousands of young Americans, reminding them that their parents' sacrifices will never be forgotten by a grateful nation." The Freedom Alliance has already awarded more than $2.5 million in scholarships to the children of American heroes. "Students are eligible if they are the dependent child of an active duty service member who was killed or permanently disabled ( 100% VA rating) as a result of an operational mission or training accident, or who is currently certified as POW or MIA. The applicant must also be a senior in high school, a high school graduate or enrolled in an institution of high learning" (colleges, universities, etc.) Students must also be under age 26 at the time of application for the scholarship. Scholarships are renewable for up to three years for a total of 4 scholarships. Complete details about the scholarship are available here. 9.The Miami Dade American Dream Scholarship- (There are several programs across the country that offer scholarships called American Dream Scholarships; however, I tried to profile the two biggest ones.) Through its American Dream Scholarship, Miami Dade College seeks to help students make their dreams of pursuing a higher education a reality. The program covers in-state tuition for two years (60 college level credits) of college at Miami Dade. If students meet the requirements for the American Dream Scholarship, no separate application for the scholarship is required. To receive the American Dream Scholarship, students must:

"meet all requirements by the August 1st, 2011 deadline
Currently reside in Miami-Dade County
Have earned a standard high school diploma, GED, or home schooled diploma in Miami Dade County during the May-August 2011 period
Have a cumulative high school weighted GPA of 3.00 or above
Be ready for college-level courses (must meet the minimum course placement scores)
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If unable to submit, please contact the Financial Aid Office."

10. The American Dream Scholarship - The American Dream Scholarship was established as a collaborative effort between Sallie Mae and The United Negro College Fund. The scholarship program offers scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000 for African Americans with financial need. Eligible applicants must: be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, have a minimum 2.5 grade point average, meet Pell Grant eligibility criteria, and be enrolled full-time at approved, accredited, undergraduate institutions. (Usually the scholarship deadline for this one is around March or April. The Scholarship is closed for 2011. It should soon be open for 2012.)
11.New England PATRIOTS Football Fans Scholarships - If you are a student that lives in New England, then the New England Patriots want to try to help send you to college. The New England Patriots Charitable Foundation will provide scholarships for New England inner-city youth who might not otherwise be able to seek higher education. The Foundation has been committed to helping students attend college and has awarded scholarships over the past 5 years. The Patriots Totally.com site also has scholarship contests annually for fans. Last year, the following scholarship was offered (according to associated content) : "The Patriots ha(d)... a Write On Contest for Massachusetts residents. To enter, (fans) simply (had to) write between 500-750 words about the Patriots most recent game. After every four game stretch on the Patriots schedule, a first place winner of $5,000, two second place winners of $2,500, and six $1,000 winners ... receive(d) scholarship money. In addition, at the conclusion of the season, all previous winners ... (were) eligible to win the $15,000 grand prize, $10,000 runner-up prize or the $5,000 honorable mention prize." For 2011, they have not yet announced their scholarship programs but there are two places to check for their announcements of this year's scholarships programs. For information about scholarships that are provided by the New England Charitable Foundation, please go to this site later in the year to. 12. Scholarships for Descendants of The Signers of The Declaration of Independence - Can you trace your family tree all the way back to the signers of the Declaration of Independence? If so, then you should consider applying for the $1,500 DSDI Scholarship. The Society of the Descendants of the Declaration of Independence (they sponsor the scholarship) will need verification of your ancestry. The website for the organization also provides helpful advice about how to find out about your ancestry. You will also need to become a member of the Society by February 15th, 2012 in order to qualify for the scholarship for that year. The membership link and all of the details are available in the link that is listed above. The Society also recommends that you should join their organization as soon as possible in order to establish yourself as a member in good standing. To be eligible, students also must attend a four year public university. The scholarships are presented every year on the 4th of July (as you might expect.)
13. Scholarships from Other Patriotic Lineage Societies - Many of the following lineage societies don't even require you to become a member in order to be eligible for their scholarship. Lineage is sometimes not a prerequisite either. However, the following societies do strive to help students develop a knowledge and appreciation of the history behind their associations:
A. Daughters of The American Revolution - The Daughters of The American Revolution awards more than $150,000 in scholarships and financial aid each year to high school and college students. The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors an astounding amount of scholarships in fields ranging from medicine to law to history (and there are many more fields.) Scholarships are typically renewable for up to four years; however, these must be four consecutive years of attendance. Scholarships are awarded to qualified applicants regardless of race, religion, sex, or national origin, and students do not have to be members of DAR. However, applicants must be U.S. citizens and must attend or plan to attend an accredited college or university in the United States. DAR chapter sponsorship is not required; however, a chapter or state chair may work with the applicant to put the information together to send to the DAR scholarship committee. The deadlines for most of these scholarships usually range from February to April. Please continue to check the link above to see when the 2012 information will be listed.
B. National Society of Colonial Dames of America - is dedicated to promoting the national heritage of the United States through historic preservation, patriotic service, and educational projects. As part of its educational mission, the NSCDA awards scholarship grants to Native Americans to study nursing. The Society also provides regional and district awards to graduate students in American History, and state awards for American History students at different levels.
C. Sons of The American Revolution - The purpose of the scholarship is to: "foster a general interest in and appreciation for the events and people of the American Revolution." According to their site, this is the criteria for eligibility: "The applicant, male or female, must be a descendant of a Revolutionary Patriot or recommended by a current member of the Virginia Society of the Sons of The Revolution. If a descendant, the applicant will be asked to give a brief summary of the ancestor's role in the Revolutionary War. If not a descendant, a brief summary of the important events during the Revolutionary War in his or her state of residence will be required. There is no implication of preference or advantage if the applicant is a descendant of a member, solely a difference in the subject matter for the written paper. The applicant shall attend or be a graduate of a public or private secondary school, or a four-year college or university. The applicant shall have applied for admission to or be a student in a four-year college or university, or graduate school." Applicants should also include a scholarship application form when they apply for the scholarship. Full details are available at the link. The deadline for the scholarship is usually in April. Please continue to check this link for 2012 information. Also, the link at Suite 101 shows that the SAR also sponsor an Eagle Scout scholarship.
14. American Patriot Freedom Scholars - This is a scholarship for students whose parents served in the military. This $1,000 scholarship from Homefront America is awarded based on merit and also includes an essay competition. The fund is currently closed; however, it usually opens later in the year. Check back with the website after January 1st if you are interested in finding out more about the scholarship.
15. Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund - As of 9/11/10, the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund has distributed $55 million to 1,639 students. According to Financial Aid Finder.com, "the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund provides generous scholarship assistance to children and spouses of 9/11 victims. Scholarship assistance is available for four years of college and can aid a student in attending any accredited post-secondary school, including those outside the United States. Limited funds are also available for graduate study. The minimum scholarship amount is $1,000. The Families of Freedom fund reviews applications year-round -so if you think you, or someone you know, qualifies for a scholarship, call the Fund toll-free at 1-877-862-0136.-" It is also possible to apply online at the first link provided for the Fund scholarship.

16. Young American Creative Patriotic Art Scholarship - This scholarship is awarded by The Ladies Auxiliary of The Veterans of Foreign Wars. The maximum award for this scholarship will be $10,000. 8 scholarships are usually awarded by the Ladies Auxiliary. Second place through Eighth place awards range from $5,000 to $500 scholarships. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12. Students must attend school in the same state as the sponsoring Ladies Auxiliary. Home-schooled students are eligible; however, foreign exchange students are not. Art that is submitted for the contest must be on paper or canvas. Water color, pencil, pastel, charcoal, tempera, crayon, acrylic, pen-and-ink or oil may be used. digital art may be used but must be on paper or canvas...No discs will be accepted. When submitting computer/digital art, be aware that all images need to be original: do not scan in or otherwise use photographs or art created by others; all images incorporated must be the artist's own and not lifted from publications or outside sources. Do not frame any art! Please refer to the website for further instructions. ( The contest for this scholarship is currently not open. Please do not try to apply until later in the year. The deadline for this this contest will be some time in March of 2012.)
17. College of the Ozarks Patriotic Scholarships - The great thing about the College of the Ozarks is that it is what is often referred to as a 'work-college'. { Work colleges are great because they make sure that students have all their college expenses paid and that students graduate without any debt. They are called work colleges because students do have jobs (much like work-study but without the debt.) I have listed several other work colleges on the right hand column under the section entitled: "Tuition Free/ Full Tuition Colleges (That's Right; No Cost)/ Work Colleges." I should probably do an entire post about these full tuition/ work colleges. } Therefore, just from the start, students at the College of the Ozarks are already getting an affordable education. In fact, on the site the College promises that: "College of the Ozarks guarantees to meet the entire Cost of Education (tuition) for each full-time student through a combination of the work program and federal, state, and institutional funds." In addition to all of this, students at the College of the Ozarks can obtain more scholarships. One of these is the Patriotic Scholarship. This is how the scholarship is described on this link: " Patriotic Scholarships are provided to students who attend and satisfactorily complete the Leader’s Training Course and/or the Leader Development and Assessment Course. This $1,500 partial room and board scholarship will be divided between the fall and spring semesters ($400 in the fall and $1,100 in the spring), assuming satisfactory academic, work, and citizenship standards have been maintained. Contracted and ROTC Scholarship resident students will receive a full room and board Patriotic Scholarship. Qualifying non-resident students will receive compensation for books, cafeteria meals, and transportation. Selected students who consecutively complete the four basic military science courses (MIL 121, 131, 202, and 212) during their freshman and sophomore years, will also be eligible for the Patriotic Scholarship."

Krispy Kreme (chain), Denny's (chain), Beef O' Brady's (chain), Waffle House (national chain), Medieval Times(chain), Chick-fil-A (in Tampa), Downtown Joe's (Napa, CA), and Frankie and Benny's (UK) are all offering specials. Most of these Father's Day specials are dads eat free specials. However, a few are not. 3. Shula's 347 Grill (Atlanta) - If you live in Atlanta, then you can treat Dad to lunch or dinner on Shula's. Dads eat free at Shula's with the purchase of another meal. The Counter (All across The Country)- If you bring your dad to the Counter on Sunday, June 19th, and say: "BFD" (acronym for burger for dad) then they will give him a free burger with a paying guest. The offer is valid for the 1/3 lb burger. This offer is valid at all Counter locations except airport locations. It is a dine in only offer. One burger per dad with a paying guest. They have locations in California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, New York, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

5. Free Breakfast at IKEA (All across The Country) - If you take your dad out to any IKEA restaurant (except in Tampa) before 11am on Fathers' Day, they will give him a free breakfast. The breakfast includes scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon and coffee. They have too many locations to list them all here but go to this list to find the location that is near you.

6. Firebowl Cafe (Texas, Colorado) - The Firebowl Cafe will treat your dad to a free meal with the purchase of another meal. A son or daughter must be present for the meal to be offered. This offer is valid at both of their locations (both Englewood, CO. and Austin, TX.) The offer is valid for the full day of Fathers' Day.

7. Texas De Brazil (All across The Country)- Participating Texas de Brazil locations across the country are offering a free meal to dads with the purchase of another meal. Some locations are honoring this special on a walk-in basis but others are requiring participation in their e-club ( all you have to do is sign up on line). A special warning for the Northfield Denver location, (because the special was publicized on Yelp) all reservations are booked up and they only have walk-in seating available. People that are close to other locations, should book reservations as soon as possible (and make sure that their location is participating.)

8. Fazoli's (across the Country)- Sign up for their e-Family club (it is really easy to sign up online) and fathers will get free pasta all Fathers' Day with the purchase of another meal. Call a location that is near you (they are all over the country) to find out if they are participating in the Fathers' Day offer.

9. Qdoba Mexican Grill (All across The Country)- If you sign up for Qdoba rewards, they will send out an offer later this week for a buy one get one free offer for a free meal for dad on Fathers' day.   This is one of the many offers that you can obtain by signing up for the Qdoba rewards card. On birthdays, they offer a special birthday gift. They offer many other free entrees and exclusive offers with their rewards card. Many restaurants offer these free email rewards clubs (more on that later.)

10. Boondock's Fun Center (Northglenn, Co and Utah)- The Northglenn location of Boondocks has a Fathers' Day special. Fathers get a free entree with the purchase of an unlimited fun pass. No coupon is needed in order to redeem this offer. Just mention the ad to obtain the offer. The original source (link leads there) was not certain if the 2 Utah locations were offering this special. Boondocks offers the following attractions: miniature golf, go-carts, laser tag, bumper boats, roller coaster simulators, junior racer cars, and arcades.

11. The Village at Edgewater (Edgewater, CO) - Take your dad out to eat at the Village at Edge Water on Fathers' Day and dad eats free. Offer is valid all day. (Most of these deals require somebody else to order another meal; they didn't specify this when I verified the offer. But I assume that it is a buy one get one free offer.) 12. Fleming's Steak House And Wine Bar (Englewood, Co) - For a more refined brunch, you might want to treat your father to a 3 course brunch at Fleming's Denver at Inverness. The brunch will be available from 11:30a.m. to 3p.m. If you treat your dad to Fleming's, then Fleming's will give your father an additional $25 gift certificate that he can use at another visit to Fleming's. Their regular menu will also be available on Fathers' Day.

The nice thing about the following scholarships is that their criteria isn't as difficult to meet as most scholarships. The interesting thing about the following scholarships is that they are all a little unusual. But if they help you pay for tuition, and provide you with a little humor along the way, then they are worth knowing about. Here is a list of some of the most unusual scholarships that I have heard about:

1. Scholarships for Trekkies- a. If you are a die-hard Star Trek fan, then you'll be happy to know that your hours of watching the show can be put to good use. If you are an active member of Star Fleet Academy (an organization modeled around Star Trek), who attends either a traditional college/university or any other type of college (graduate school, trade school, community college or junior college), then you could be eligible for this scholarship. SFI is making it a little easier to: 'live long and prosper.' SFI offers several of its $500 Star Trek Scholarships in majors such as:

b. The Kor Memorial Scholarship from the Klingon Language Institute is awarded to recognize and encourage scholarship in the fields of language study. Fluency in the Klingon language is not a prerequisite; however, creative and innovative applicants are preferred. Graduate and undergraduate students are eligible for this $500 scholarship. Academic department chairs and/or deans must submit nominations in order for students to be eligible. The deadline for the scholarship is June 1st.

2. Scholarship for Left-Handed Students- There is one thing that luminaries such as: Albert Einstein, Picasso, Babe Ruth, and President Ronald Reagan had in common. They were all left- handed. An estimated average of 11% of the population is left-handed. And if you are left-handed, then you are in luck. One Pennsylvania school's scholarship caters to you. The Frederick and Mary F. Beckley Scholarship (offered at Juniata College) is offered exclusively to left-handed students. The scholarship awards a minimum of $1000 and a maximum of $1500 to qualified students. Students must have attended the school for a year and meet other criteria that is specified in the included link.

3. Doctor Seuss Scholarship- The publisher of Dr. Seuss books, Random House, sponsors the "Oh, The Places You Will Go" $10,000 essay competition.   Applicants must be 21 years old or younger. The complete set of rules and criteria is available on the link. The deadline is January 15th. This will give you plenty of time if you are considering applying for this scholarship next year.


4. The Un-Athletic Scholarship- If you are bad at sports, then you might consider the Gertrude J. Deppen Scholarship Fund at Bucknell University.   This fund gives two scholarships annually to Bucknell students who do not participate in strenuous athletic contests. The scholarship is also restricted to students who demonstrate financial need and who have resided in Mount Carmel for 10 years. Moreover, eligible students must have graduated from Mount Carmel Public High School. Habitual users of tobacco, intoxicating liquor, and narcotics are disqualified.



5. Writers & Illustrators of The Future Scholarship/Contest- The Writers of the Future Contest and The Illustrators of The Future Contest are available for amateur student authors and illustrators who specialize in the genre of science fiction. Entrants retain all publication rights. All awards are judged by professional writers and artists exclusively. Moreover, entrants can enter any time because there are always quarterly contests that include the opportunity to be judged for the annual contest. The contest has four quarters, beginning on October 1st, January 1st, April 1st, and July 1st. The year will end on September 30th. To be eligible for a contest in a particular quarter, an entry must be postmarked or received electronically no later than midnight at the last day of the quarter. The grand prize for the annual writing contest is $5000. There are also $1000, $750, and $500 prizes every three months. All winners will also receive trophies. To be eligible, entries must be works of prose up to 17,000 words in length. All types of science fiction, fantasy, and dark fantasy are welcome. There are also quarterly contests for the illustrators that have a total of $1500 in prizes. Quarterly winners compete for the $5000 annual prize. The contest is open to new and amateur scifi and fantasy artists from around the world. An eligible entry will include three illustrations about three different subjects. 6. Duck Calling Scholarship- Believe it or not, it is actually possible to win a scholarship for being the best duck caller. The Chick and Sophie Major Memorial Duck Calling Contest offers the first-place winner $2000. High school seniors are eligible to compete for college scholarships that total $4,250 in this contest. You don't have to write an essay or have a certain GPA in order to win this contest. The contest is open to any high school senior that is graduating in 2011. Contestants have 90 seconds to use 4 calls (hail, feed, comeback, and mating). The competition will be on Friday, November 25, 2011. 7. Golf Caddie Scholarships- According to the link for The Chick Evans Scholarship, the scholarship "is a full tuition and housing college scholarship for golf caddies that is renewable for up to four years. Each year, more than 800 deserving caddies across the country attend college on four-year scholarships from the Evans Scholars Foundation. Selected applicants will have a strong caddie record, excellent grades, outstanding character and demonstrated financial need... Applications are accepted in the beginning of the candidate's senior year of high school starting September 1st... Preference will be given to applications postmarked in September." b. The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund - this scholarship is a renewable, need and merit based undergraduate scholarship that usually awards from $1,500 to $7,500 per student per year, depending upon financial need and ranking in their evaluation process. The value of the award over four years can total over $20,000. Applicants must have completed at least two years of work as a golf caddie, helper in a pro shop, or course operations superintendent at a club in Massachusetts. It is a good idea to request a package by mid-summer (although the packages are available until mid November) if you want to be put on an application mailing list for awards the following school year. Completed applications are due by December 1st. To be eligible, an applicant should submit a recommendation from a guidance counselor and three club officials, complete an essay, be interviewed, submit transcripts, and FAFSA (or CSS/Profile) data.

8. Llamafest Scholarships- The Michigan Llama Association (MLA)Kathy Larson Memorial Scholarship consists of a $500 stipend awarded to offset the expenses of attending either vocational or post-high school education. Either a student or their parents should be members of the MLA in order for the student to remain eligible. You don't have to be an llama expert in order to be eligible; however, you must submit an essay and two letters of recommendations (one from an MLA member in addition to one more letter of recommendation.) The Annual Llamafest Silent Auction proceeds fund the program. The scholarship is presented at either the spring membership meeting or during the Lamafest show. Once awarded, the scholarship is renewable for up to three times during the student's education. The deadline varies annually (in 2010 it was May 31st.) 9. Fun Scholarships such as The 'Do-Over' Scholarship or the 'Super-Power' Scholarship- The Scholarships Experts offer several fun scholarship contests on their site. The next scholarship deadline coming up at the Scholarship Experts.com site is the deadline for their 'Do-Over' Scholarship. To qualify for this scholarship, just submit an online short written response (consisting of 250 words or less) for the question: "If your could give any celebrity or famous person a 'do-over,' who would you give it to and why?" The Scholarship Experts.com will award three 'Do-Over' Scholarships of $1,000 (each scholarship is for $1,000.) Students must be at least 13 years of age or older at the time of application in order to be eligible for the scholarship. They also must be legal residents of the U.S. and currently enrolled (or enrolled no later than the fall of 2017) in an accredited post-secondary institution. The deadline for the 'Do-Over' Scholarship is on June 30th. But even if determining what the best way to perform celebrity damage control would be is not your cup of tea, then the scholarship experts still have several other scholarships that you might be interested in pursuing. For instance, they also have: the $1,994 'I Was Born in 1994' Scholarship (the deadline is on July 31st), the $1,995 'I Was Born in 1995' Scholarship ( the deadline is on August 31st), the $1,000 'Shout It Out' Scholarship (they will award three scholarships; and the deadline is on September 30th ), the $1,500 'What's Your Widget' Scholarship ( the deadline is on October 15th), the $3,000 'Education Matters' Scholarship (the deadline is on October 31st), the $1,996 'I Was Born in 1996' Scholarship (the deadline is on November 30th), and the $1,000 'Top Ten List Scholarship' (they will award three scholarships; and the deadline is on December 31st.) Moreover, most years they usually offer their: 'Super Power' Scholarships and 'All About Education' Scholarships. Look for these in the beginning of 2012.

  10.Bagpipe Scholarships- The Carnegie Mellon Bagpipe Scholarship has been dubbed: 'one of the least competitive scholarships in the country.' The scholarship garnered publicity as being this obscure when the Wall Street Journal wrote a piece about it. A reprint of the article is available at this link (you have to be WSJ subscriber to access the full article directly.) The scholarship package for the program is $7,000 (and even comes with subsidized kilts as a bonus!) Moreover, Carnegie is the only school with a Bagpipe major; and the program offers the opportunity to study under a world renowned professor. However, it is not highly sought after (in other words, if you want the scholarship, you won't have to compete with a lot of other students in order to obtain it.) The scholarship is part of program that in its 16 year history has only had 6 students that have pursued the major.
b. Scottish Heritage Scholarships are available through Lyons College. You do not have to major or even minor in their Scottish Heritage program to be eligible but you do have to audition for their Ceilidh band to be considered as a candidate. The scholarships are awarded to students that are pipers, drummers, Highland dancers, Scottish fiddlers, and accordian players. The application is available here.

11. 'Stuck At Prom' Duck Tape Prom Dress Scholarship- If you love designing fashion but you missed the auditions for getting into Project Runway, then you can still enter The Duck Tape Stuck At Prom contest.  Much like the creative assignments on Project Runway, you are not allowed to use traditional fabric to create your designs (in this case, it is for your prom attire.) To be eligible, you and your date must create your prom outfits entirely out of Duct tape. And yes, you and your date must be willing to actually attend your prom in your outfits that are made out of duct tape. Send in your picture to Duck Tape to enter the contest. The link above leads directly to where you need to enter. The deadline to enter is on June 13th. The first place winner is awarded $5,000 each. The second place winner is awarded $3,000 each. The third place winner is awarded $2,000 each. The remaining top ten couples win $500 each. According to the FAQ section on the site, "The school that hosted a winning couples' prom will also receive the same prize amount for that winner. 12. Parapsychology Scholarship- Attention: X-File fans, you always knew it: ' The truth is out there.' And the $3,000 Eileen J. Garrett Scholarship aims to facilitate your exploration of it through their scholarships for parapsychology studies. Students must either be enrolled in an accredited parapsychology degree program and/or be completing graduate level research projects that are related to parapsychology to be eligible. Applications must be received by July 15th. At least $4,500 in additional fellowship and research grants are available through the Parapsychology Foundation. Full details are listed on the link. 13. Fragrance Scholarship- This is a scholarship for post-graduate students. This scholarship from the Fragrance Research Fund offers up to $50,000 for clinical psychologists conducting research in the field of aromachology. 14. SCUBA Diving Scholarships- The Our World Underwater Scholarships (also known as the Rolex Scholarships) are provided to students who want to experience hands-on field studies or underwater research. The scholarship provides for a year of travel so that the recipient can have a variety of underwater experiences. Each scholar will be given the opportunity to work side by side with current leaders in underwater disciplines. You can learn about underwater photography, biology, scientific explorations, and more. Each scholar travels primarily within their own region, but may have opportunities throughout the underwater world. Currently there are three scholarships. The maximum amount of cash awarded for the North American Scholarship is $20,000,  £15,000 for the European Rolex Scholarship, and 30,000 (Aus) for the Australasian Scholarship. To be eligible, a student must be at least 21 years old and no older than 26 years old at the time of the application deadline. Only applicants who have not earned a graduate degree by April 1st of the scholarship year and have not yet chosen a clearly defined career path will be considered. Applicants should have high academic standing and be fluent in English. Other eligibility requirements include: evidence of health insurance, certification as a rescue diver, and proof of a diving medical exam. Full details and the application is available at this link.

15. Hockey Pokey Scholarships- Full details about The Hokey Pokey Scholarship can be found at: The Idaho Foundation's Scholarship Opportunities site. The royalties from the Hokey Pokey song fund the scholarship. The scholarship is for full-time sophomores that are enrolled at the College of Southern Idaho's music program. The recipient of the scholarship does not need to demonstrate financial need.

16. Safety Scholarship- You don't even need to submit an essay to qualify for this scholarship. Instead, submit a video to the 2011 Safety Scholars Contest. The winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship. All drivers from 16-21 years old (who live in either the U.S. or Canada) are eligible. To enter, just create a 25 or 55 second video about driver safety and upload it to the site at the link above. The deadline for the contest is on June 24th. Bridgestone (the sponsor of the contest) will select 10 finalists. At this point, the public will be able to vote on the best video (the winner of the scholarship). The second place winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship. The third place winner will also receive a $5,000 scholarship. 17. Tupperware Home Parties Scholarship- Get a scholarship to party. Okay, its a Tupperware party (but still.) The Tupperware Party Scholarship is offered to dependent children of Tupperware employees. Tupperware will award up to a total of $10,500 in scholarships annually; the minimum award will be $1,000. To qualify, employees need to have been continuously employed by Tupperware for over a year. Applicants need to be a senior in high school with a GPA of at least 2.0 in order to be eligible. 18. Easy Scholarship from OP Loftbed- The OP Loftbed is one of the most popular loft beds used in college dorms. To give back to students, the company is offering a scholarship that is much
easier to obtain than most scholarships. In the $500 OP Loftbed Scholarship contest, applicants are not judged based on their GPA, writing skills, volunteer service, or history of leadership. OP Loftbeds want their judges and those that apply to have fun with answers to some simple questions. They are looking for creative answers to questions such as: "What would you like your life legacy to be?" It is important to read all of the instructions very carefully. (Please refer to the site in the link to find out more.) All applicants need to be U.S. citizens attending (or planning to attend) an accredited college in the U.S. in order to be eligible. The deadline to enter is on July 31st.

19. Greeting Card Scholarship- Enter the 5th Annual Create-A-Greeting Card Scholarship Contest for a chance to win the $10,000 scholarship. In addition to this, the winner's school will also receive $1,000. Furthermore, the winner's entry will be turned into a bona fide greeting card by The Gallery Collection. To enter, submit an original artwork, photo, or computer graphic for the front of your greeting card. The contest submissions will be accepted from March 17, 2011 to January 14, 2012. To qualify, applicants must be 14 years or older at the time of entry and be enrolled in high school, college or university.

20. Scholarships for Descendants of The Signers of The Declaration of Independence- Can you trace your family tree all the way back to the signers of the Declaration of Independence? If so, then you should consider applying for the $1,500 DSDI Scholarship. The Society of the Descendants of the Declaration of Independence (they sponsor the scholarship) will need verification of your ancestry. The website for the organization also provides helpful advice about how to find out about your ancestry. You will also need to become a member of the Society by February 15th, 2012 in order to qualify for the scholarship for that year. The membership link and all of the details are available in the link that is listed above. The Society also recommends that you should join their organization as soon as possible in order to establish yourself as a member in good standing. To be eligible, students also must attend a four year public university. The scholarships are presented every year on the 4th of July (as you might expect.)

21. Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest- If you have read the classic, Atlas Shrugged , then you might consider writing an essay about the novel that will qualify for this next contest. The Ayn Rand Institute's Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest  awards $10,000 for the best essay. They also award 3 second prizes of $2,000 each, 5 third prizes of $1,000 each, 25 finalists $100 each, and 50 semifinalists $50 each. 12th graders, college undergraduates, and graduate students are eligible to apply for this contest. The essay should address one of three topics posted on the Institute's website. The essay should be at least 800 words and no longer than 1600 words in length. The essay must be your own original work. Submit your essay by the September 17th deadline. No application is required to qualify for the contest. The contest is open to students worldwide. Probably the only unusual aspect of the award is that you do not have to use the prize money towards your tuition. All awards are cash prizes (they do not place restrictions on how the prize money is spent). Also, keep in mind that they have more contests that will be available soon. You can enter more than one of the Institute's contests (but only one paper per contest is eligible). The details are available on the FAQ site. The contest that will be available in the future will be for different Rand novels. These contests are as follows: The Anthem Essay Contest (open to 8th, 9th & 10th graders), The We The Living Essay Contest ( open to 10th, 11th & 12th graders), and The Fountainhead Essay Contest (open to 11th & 12th graders). Look for these shortly before the beginning of 2012.

22. Scholarship for Being Tall- If you are a male 6'2" or taller, or a female 5'10" or taller, than you are eligible for the $1,000 Tall Clubs International Scholarship. Candidates for the scholarship must also be under 21 years of age and attending their first year of college in the following Fall. Currently, you must contact a TCI Member Club closest to you for sponsorship. Details about the exact procedure that must be followed to qualify for the scholarship are listed on the link.

23. Scholarship for Being under 4'10"- By contrast, The Billy Barty Foundation Scholarship is awarded to students who are 4'10" or less in height. Complete details are available at the website link. The Foundation raises funds every year for all of its important work (including the scholarship) through its Billy Barty Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic. 24. Scholarships for Twins- In one estimate, the cost of completing college for a pair of twins could end up costing over half a million dollars just for tuition. (Please refer to the site in the link to find the complete estimates for the costs of tuition for students at various schools with special twins discounts and scholarships.) Some schools recognize how prohibitively expensive it can be for both twins to attend school. To defray the cost of some of these expected college expenses, schools are offering the following deals:
a. Lake Erie College (Painesville, Ohio)- This full tuition scholarship (up to 18 credit hours per semester) is awarded 50/50 if both twins are enrolled full-time at Lake Erie College. Other scholarships that are available through Lake Erie College are listed here too.
b. Wilson College (Chambersburg, Pennsylvania)-These annual scholarships are for twins and triplets. The scholarship pays for 45% of each students annual tuition. These scholarships cannot be combined with other merit or affiliation scholarships awarded by the college, with the exception of the SEMLAR and Disert Honors. Wilson is an independent college for women.
c. Carl Albert State College (Poteau, Oklahoma)-The Paula Nieto Twin Scholarship awards $200 to twins.
d. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (Miami, Oklahoma) -The school has a Twin/Triplet Dorm Waiver that covers the amount of semi-private room expenses for each twin or triplet who attend NEO together. The deadline to apply for the waiver is September 1st. Twins and triplets do need to attend A&M College together in order to qualify for the waiver. However, the twins or triplets do not need to share the same room together. The application is available through this link.
e. Kelly School of Business at Indiana University (Bloomington, Indiana) -The Layton Frazier McKinley Scholarship was established by Lewis E. McKinley's estate to honor his brother, Layton. Both of the McKinley brothers attended Indiana University before serving in World War II. The scholarship rewards students attending the prestigious Kelley School of Business who have at least a 'B+' grade average (the eligibility criteria specified is a 3.3 GPA or higher). Preference is given to identical twins.   There is also a preference in awarding the scholarship to accounting majors. The typical amount of the award varies. General information is also available at this link.
f. Eastern Michigan University College of Education (Ypsilanti, Michigan)- The Furlotte Twins Endowed Scholarship is awarded to upperclassman students enrolled in the College of Education elementary program. This scholarship is renewable when qualifications for the scholarship are maintained by the students. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required. The application is due in March of 2012 (for that fall).
For all Siblings-
According to Pamela Prindle Fiero, an About.com Guide (whose article became a indispensable reference for me as I compiled this twin section), some schools offer a multiple sibling discount that might be just as helpful as discounts for twins. Therefore, even if the school doesn't have a specific scholarship fund for twins, you might save just as much with the discount programs for siblings attending the same school simultaneously:
g. Quinnipiac University (Hamden, Connecticut) -Full-time, undergraduate siblings concurrently in attendance at Quinnipiac are eligible to receive this award of $2000 per year. This can be in addition to the regular financial aid award. The award is renewable each year in which the undergraduate siblings are concurrently in attendance.
h. George Washington University (Washington D.C.)- This GW Family Grant is for families that have 2 or more siblings simultaneously enrolled at GW as full-time undergraduates. The younger sibling may be eligible for this half-tuition grant that can be awarded for the full academic year or for a semester only. To be eligible for the grant, sibling must each have a birth date of Jan.1st or later and they have to be enrolled full-time in a first-time, four year bachelor's degree program. Students that have obtained discounted tuition do not qualify for this grant. Families must submit GW's Family Grant Application (including all supporting documents) by July1st. Contact GW for information about what documentation international students need to submit to become eligible: (800)222-6246. To be eligible to have the grant renewed, all siblings must continue to maintain the aforementioned requirements and keep a C (2.0) or better GPA and reapply by the July1st deadline.
i.  California Baptist University (Riverside, California) - Their multiple sibling discount saves families $500 per semester. To qualify, families must have 2 of more siblings simultaneously enrolled in the undergraduate program on a full-time basis.
j. Randolph Macon College (Lychburg, Virginia) - New recipients of the Family Grant may  receive up to $8,000 per year as long as two or more siblings are attending simultaneously. Students must also be enrolled full-time. The school also allows students whose other academic scholarships exceed or equal $8000 to qualify for an additional $1,500 in the form of a Family Grant. Their scholarship and financial aid page lists an incredible amount of programs (and even information about tax incentives.)
k.Notre Dame (Ohio)- This school's Family Alumni Plan is described on their site in the following manner: "special family tuition rates are available to incoming fulltime students who have a brother/sister/parent attending Notre Dame College as a fulltime matriculating undergraduate student or whose parent or grandparent is an alumni of the college."
For Twins That Do Not Attend The Same School-
In this excellent article, Pamela Prindle Fierto also provides resources for families where the twins don't attend the same school. She recommends that twins that attend different schools should rely on twins clubs or organizations for help with finding out about scholarships.    Here are some of the resources she listed that are still available:
l. The Twins Day Festival (Twinsburg, Ohio)- The annual event awards a $1,000 scholarship to a pair of twins. To be eligible for the scholarship, twins must be seniors in high school and have attended and registered with at least three of the last five Twins Festivals. (Caveat Lector -A Cautionary Note to The Reader here- A couple of weeks ago, I was watching the famous Suze Orman segment: 'Can I Afford This?' During this segment, a pair of twins called in to see if she would advise them to go to the Twins Festival. At least for this pair of twins, it seemed more expensive to attend the festival just once ((never mind the three times that are required to obtain the scholarship)) than to obtain the $1,000 scholarship. Please take that into consideration. Unless you already live in Ohio ((or can get there for free)), it is probably not cost effective to go to the festival three times just to obtain the scholarship. If you are going to the festival anyway, then it might make sense.)
m. The Northwest Association Mother of Twins Clubs- The NWAMOTC has at least two different scholarship programs that might be of interest to families with twins: the Shan Pynes Scholarship and the Gwen Lawson Making Opportunities for More Schooling (MOMS). Several Shan Pynes Scholarships are awarded each year to qualified multiple-birth applicants seeking higher education. The application deadline is March 1st. The NWAMOTC awards the Gwen Lawson Scholarship for the mothers of multiples that meet the NWAMOTC's qualifications and are looking to further their education. This deadline is also on March 1st. The nice thing about the NWAMOTC is that they also provide a helpful link to universities and colleges scholarship programs for twins.
n. Local chapters of Twins organizations- In addition to the resources available from national organizations, many local chapters offer their own scholarships. For instance, the Illinois Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs, Inc.  offers 5 scholarships. Applications must be postmarked by August 31st, 2011 in order to be eligible. Also, The Massachusetts Mothers of Twins Association (MMOTA) have scholarships available for qualifying members. They award 3 scholarships. However, the deadline for completed applications was on April 15th. You can apply by this deadline in 2012. Furthermore, the New York State Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs also offers their Marie Simmons scholarships. They currently offer 2 of these scholarship awards of $1,000 each. Applicant must submit an 250- 400 word essay; and the title of the essay must be: "How Higher Education Will Affect My Future." To be eligible, students must also be unmarried and reside at home with their mother. The mother must be a mother of multiples. The mother must have also been a resident of New York for the last 5 years. Applicant must be a high school graduate or equivalent that has completed at least one term of post-secondary education with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. The rest of the details are available at the link. o. International Twins Organizations- Conversely, you might need to learn about resources from an international organization.
Other Sources for Scholarships- There are some other places that have scholarship contests for twins:
p. Photo Contest for Twins- Submit a photo of your twins or multiples for a chance to win a $1000
scholarship. The Grand Prize is a $10,000 scholarship for the year of 2011.
q. Inspiring Story of Two Super Twins who were offered more than $3.58 million in scholarships- Read and learn from the Dawson Twins (pictured above). This is definitely the way to get as many scholarships as possible.
r. Fastweb's Enormous List of Scholarships for Twins- I saved the best resource for last. This astoundingly large list of scholarships for twins is only the first page. If you are interested in scholarships for twins, make sure that you scroll all the way to the bottom to find the 2nd page.

25. Scholarships for Cheerleaders- At Notre Dame in Ohio, they award a scholarship for cheerleaders. This scholarship is awarded to traditional age freshmen who are full-time students. Awards are based on financial need. Here is a massive list of scholarships available for cheerleaders compiled by scholarships.com. Here is another comprehensive list of scholarships compiled by About.com  .
26. Scholarships for Fat Acceptance- The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance offers 2 scholarships.  The $1,000 Fashion Designer Scholarship is awarded to encourage student fashion designers to specialize in designing fashions for the plus-size body. To be eligible, applicants must submit three drawings of plus-size designs and an essay that is 750 words or less. The deadline for this scholarship is on June1st. The scholarship will be awarded on August 6th. Full details are available at the site from the link. The NAAFA HAES Scholarship is a $1,000 award that encourages further study across a variety of disciplines. The research should incorporate Health at Every Size (HAES) tenets and principles. For some reason, the link to that specific scholarship didn't lead me to more information about the scholarship. Contact the NAAFA to learn more.

27. Scholarships for Fire Sprinkler Awareness- Fire sprinklers save lives and property; and they could also save you money on college if you apply for this next scholarship. The American Fire Sprinkler Association Second Chance Scholarship is a contest with $5,000 in awards. The contest is open to U.S. citizens or legal residents with high school diplomas or equivalent GEDs.   The winner must be enrolled in a college or university (or already be enrolled for the Spring 2012 season). Winners are not based on financial need. They will disqualify any entry that doesn't meet all of their requirements. Therefore, it is important to read all of the rules on their page. Applicants will be required to read an essay about fire sprinklers. Then they will take a ten-part, multiple choice, open-book test. Entrants will obtain one entry into a drawing for one of five $1,000 scholarships. Entries will be accepted until August 24th. The AFSA also sponsors a $20,000 High School Senior Essay Scholarship Contest every spring.

28. Scholarships for Bowling- The United States Bowling Congress sponsors several bowling scholarships.  The scholarships are available for a wide variety of ages. Each scholarship that the USBC directly sponsors usually range from between $1,000 -$5,000. In addition to their direct scholarships, they list the more than $6 million in scholarships available through the SMART program.

29. Scholarships for Rugby- Even though Rugby is not considered an official sport at most U.S. universities (nor is it a NCAA sport in the U.S.), you can still receive a scholarship for playing Rugby. Scholarship SS has compiled a list of 7 Rugby scholarships. One example of some of the scholarships listed on this page is the $4,000 in scholarships from MARF. Another example of their listings is the $100,000 in scholarships offered by American International College.  Also, the United States Rugby Football Foundation offers the Kevin Higgins College Scholarships. They will award eight $1,0000 scholarships. The deadline to send in your completed application is July 31st. U.S.A. Rugby offers a very comprehensive list of Rugby scholarships across the country. This is yet another list of Rugby scholarships.

30. Scholarships for Puppetry- The UNIMA-USA Scholarship for Puppetry is intended to help pay for tuition for American puppeteers who wish to study puppetry in other countries. In the past, the organization has helped pay for studies in France, Germany, England, and more places. Currently, the scholarship ranges from $400-$700. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is December 31st. Applicants must be 18 years or older. Conversely, the Puppeteers of America has scholarships for 12-21 year olds. Applicants must be members of Puppeters of America. Additionally, the ICFA lists many Bible Colleges that offer scholarships for puppetry. The Connecticut Guild of Puppetry offers the Margo Rose Scholarships for students to attend the National Puppetry Conference. This link is a link to them and some other puppetry links.  Flock Theater also list some scholarships. The Puppetry Homepage lists worldwide internships, scholarships , and schools for puppetry. Also, The Myriad of Marionettes lists scholarships, awards and grants on this page.  The University of London also provides access to a range of scholarships, awards, and funds for its students in puppetry. Students on this course are eligible to apply for the Emergent International Scholarship, as well as having the opportunity to secure the Clive Brook Memorial Award. The Emergent International Scholarship will permit non-EU candidates to benefit from reduced fees in their final year of study.

31. Rodeo Scholarships- The Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo has awarded more than $4.5 million in scholarships. The scholarships range from $2,500 to $15,000 ( the average scholarship they award is approximately $8,000). The Houston Livestock and Rodeo website lists several rodeo scholarships. Texas Tech also awards rodeo scholarships based on academic merit and contributions to Tech rodeo. Finally, the Tri-State High School Rodeo Association also awards several scholarships.

32. Scholarships for Accordion Players- The Golden State Accordion Club offers scholarships for Accordion Players. Also, the American Accordion Musicological Society hosts a Contest with the maximum award of $1,000. The deadline to enter is in September.

33. Scholarships from Ice Cream Retailers- If you work at an ice cream shop, then you might be able to convince your employer to nominate you for one of the Bryce Thomson scholarships that the National Ice Cream Retailers Association awards to the very best candidates. They award a total of $17,000 in awards. The awards range from $1,000- $3,500. For more information, contact the NICRA at (866)303-6960.

34. Scholarships for College Poker Championship Tournaments- According to Collegebound.net, students do not need to spend any money to enter this tournament. And the winning student will receive real money to go toward their education. The article from Collegebound.net states that: "The online College Poker Championship tournament gives college students the opportunity to play their hands at the popular casino game, and vie for over $100,000 in scholarship prize money. And, that's not all -- the top winner also scores an all-expenses-paid trip to Cancun and the chance to raise money for his or her favorite charity." Presumably, students must be over 21. 35. Scholarships for Vegetarians- The Vegetarian Resource Group sponsors 2 $5,000 scholarships for high school vegetarians and vegans that actively promote vegetarianism in their schools or communities. Entries may only be sent by students graduating from school in the spring of 2012. Even though the competition is open to enter, the deadline to enter is not until February 20th, 2012. That leaves plenty of time for you to convince members of your school or community that tofu really can taste just like any meat. Furthermore, you will need to submit an essay that answers the questions on the VRG website. Applications and the rest of the details are available at that link; or you can call (410)366-8343 with any questions.

36. Scholarships for Knitters and Sheep Photographers- The American Sheep Industry sponsors two scholarship opportunities: The National Make It with Wool Competition and The Sheep Photo Contest. The National Make It with Wool scholarship rewards a total of $5,000 in awards to students who promote the beauty and versatility of wool. Anyone that is 12 years old or older has an age category to enter into this competition. You can enter garments that exhibit creativity in sewing, knitting, and/or crocheting so long as it is made with a minimum of 60% wool or wool yarn. Full details are available on their site. If you are more of a photographer than a knitter, then be sure to check out the ASI's Sheep Photo Contest. The contest is open to anyone who wishes to enter. You do not have to be involved in U.S. sheep, lamb, or wool industries to qualify. The only requirement is that your photograph must include sheep. All entries must be postmarked by August 19th in order to be eligible. More than $1,000 will be awarded in prizes. Full details are provided in the link.

Here is what I found as I scoured the web for ways for you to treat your mom to a terrific Mothers' Day (even if you are on a budget):

In addition to these resources, please refer to the links on the right side of this blog for some student loan relief/repayment and even forgiveness programs (it is close to the bottom of the blog, so please scroll all the way down to find it.) If you are still in school, or planning to attend soon, a good way to avoid having this kind of crisis is to save money where you can (I have lots of links for that, and will add new ones soon). But the best way to avoid this problem might be to take advantage of the links under the "No Loan Financial Aid Schools- Schools that Provide Same Amount of Financial Aid without Loans" header.
These schools are referred to as: 'working colleges' because students are not charged any tuition. But they do have to work at the college. The other great way to avoid debt is to get a scholarship. I have a tremendous amount of links on the right side that should help there too.

Hi, Sorry that it has taken me so long to post; I have been recovering from a surgery that I had over the holidays. Like all of you, my prayers and concern have been directed to those that are suffering in Haiti because of the earthquake. So, when I heard this really good idea in terms of giving, I thought that I would share the idea with all of you. I was watching Happy Hour ( the television program), and they mentioned that their company matched their donations to help out Haiti. I started to wonder how many other employers, schools, companies, and others were willing to match donations. I thought that this seemed like one of the best ways to make your donations go as far as possible (in many cases you can double your donations this way). I did a search and found the following results for organizations that were matching donations to help out in Haiti. I'll keep all of you posted on how it goes for the ones I try. Only a few days left to enter the $10,000 College challenge (Tuesday, December 08th, 2009). But don't worry: the deadline is only for the application. The broadcast story doesn't have to be postmarked or submitted electronically until Tuesday,February 2nd, 2010. The following is from their website :

"Fox News Channel, the #1 cable news channel in America, is excited to announce the 7th Annual "Fox News Channel College Challenge." This is a nationwide competition for undergraduate students majoring in journalism, broadcast journalism, communications or an equivalent. The competition's mission is to recognize, encourage and support excellence in broadcast journalism in America's colleges and universities.

The "Fox News Channel College Challenge" requires teams of two to four students (juniors and seniors only) to research, write, produce and submit an objective broadcast news story. A panel from Fox News Channel, who are integral in the newsgathering, production and presentation of news programming, will judge the entries.

The winning team will share a scholarship of $10,000 and the team's school will receive a matching grant of $10,000. In addition, the winning team and one administrator will be invited to appear on Fox News Channel to talk about the winning entry and their experience. Members of the winning team, who are juniors, will be eligible for an internship at Fox News Channel (must meet eligibility requirements). Members of the winning team, who are seniors, will receive an entry level job interview at Fox News Channel.
